Swimming and pregnancy actually goes hand in hand like peanut butter to your jelly. One of the safest way to stay active while you are knocked up is swimming.

But then again, just like in any other workout you always have to check with your doctor, physiotherapist or midwife before you start doing this and most especially if swimming is new to you.

 

Benefits of Swimming:

1. Great form of pregnancy exercise. It is considered as such because it is very hard to injure yourself when swimming. The buoyancy of the water creates a near weightless environment, which provides a safe place for you to work out large muscle groups and the cardiovascular system.

2. The cool water also protects you from overheating and supports your joints and ligaments as you exercise, preventing injury.
3. If you swim, you burn calories, feel less fatigued, sleep better, and are better equipped to handle pregnancy’s physical and emotional challenges.
4. Swimming also helps you keep your weight within a healthy range, and some women say swimming also makes them feel less bloated.

 

 

TIPS on how to have a safe Pregnancy Swim Workout:

1. Choose a stroke that won’t put pressure on your pregnant body. Front crawl is great for a higher intensity pregnancy workout.
2. If you need a resting stroke for intervals try using a snorkel with breast stroke arms so that you don’t have to keep bobbing your head out of the water and putting pressure on your lower back, while using front crawl legs to propel you.
3. Have a light snack a couple of hours before you enter the pool.
4. Keep yourself Hydrated all the time. drink before jumping into the pool and always sip water every after 20 minutes. Do not wait to feel thirsty!
5. If you have access to a chemical-free pool in your area, use it.
6. Always shower and wash your hair immediately after leaving the pool to reduce uptake of chemicals into your bloodstream.
